Here is a heartening story about a Podengo Grande. One of these very rare dogs was found chained up behind a raucous bar on the island of Tavira, in the Algarve, Portugal. It had no water and was restricted to very limited movement by a heavy chain, which was not, however, padlocked. A Swiss lady and her friend. walking past noticed the plight of the dog, sadly not at all unusual in their native Portugal. She unchained it and then spent the entire day walking through spiky pine forests close to the Algarve coast in her flip-flops. She had intended merely to walk along the beach, until finding the Podengo Grande.
By the evening the dog was in her vacation hotel, frightened starving and thirsty, but relieved. After some time and much expenditure, she was able to bring the female Podengo Grande to London. After a few months, her physical health was restored, but it took much longer to restore her to a proper mental state. Still, it shows that it can be done.
