We were in (old) Hampshire on the south coast of England. The village of Warsash on the river Hamble is where just 75 years ago US special forces boarded landing craft to land on Omaha and Utah beaches in Normandy on D-Day.
We were walking along the river bank, when a young woman with two dogs caught up with us. We take care in such situations as Maria is often not friendly to other dogs. However, this time, she was very pleased as one dog was a whippet , the only breed that she bothers to run with. The other was a male Podengo Medio.
Freddie is eight years old and was rescued from Ireland at around six months. Maria and Freddie recognized each other immediately. Pretty soon she was licking him on the snout and sniffing in those places where a female dog sniffs a male dog, that she likes.
Freddie has a little more red color in his fawn coat than Maria. He has a deeper chest. And his ears are slightly longer and have an unusual
curl to them. But like Maria`s, they can swivel in almost any direction.
As often in England, the owner and his girl friend were unsure of what
type of dog they had rescued. But Maria and Freddie were in no doubt. They were delighted at the rare experience of finding another Podengo in England.
I am guessing that Freddie may have been rescued twice. The first time might have been from Spain or Portugal to Ireland: the second would have been from Ireland to England. There is no record of a Podengo breeder in Ireland. A small population of Spanish sailors landed in western Ireland after Francis Drake routed the Spanish Armada. Some of the fleeing Spanish galleons were wrecked by a violent storm. Some sailors were rescued. But I doubt that the warships carried Podengos.
