The young female podengo medio was rescued from a center in Thailand in May 2020. She was born into a mixed litter with other types of dog and sent with them to be fed. She has a more russet color and shorter hair than Maria as well as a ridge along her back. The owner has been told that she is part Rhodesian Ridgeback. But she looks far too small and delicate to have much of that lion-hunting breed in her genes.
Her facial expressions are exactly like Maria`s and neither I nor either dog had the slightest doubt that they were kith and kin. Like typically aloof podengos, they largely ignored each other, at first. But this was pretty positive for both of them . for neither is normally friendly to new dogs, particularly females.
How did Podengo genes get to Thailand? The nearest Portuguese settlements would have been in the Malay straits. There are a lot in the Philippines - spanish islands before the US colonised and then liberated them from the japanese.
