Last Saturday the BBC broadcast Wagner`s opera das Liebesverbot. This translates in English to Forbidden Love. It was based on Shakespeare`s Measure for Measure. His second opera to be composed, but the first to be performed: it was a total flop. It was only first performed in London in 1965 and in the US in 1988.
But Maria loved it. It was playing on the radio in our boat, whilst she was in the cockpit. Immediately she heard it she went and stood at the hatch. She stood there with her ears directed forwards as only a Podengo can. She listened for more than an hour. At times, she sat, looking just like the His Master`s Voice dog. From time to time she sang. This was a single note, within the human range, lasting about half a second. It was not at all like a bark or a growl. She was imitating the opera singers.
A couple of times, she walked away to the side of the boat and put her paws on the side deck, raising her throat towards the setting sun. Then she made a sound like a yodel. She has sung a few times before, usually to visitors whom she likes: often this is when there is food around, We have called it singing for her supper. I am more than ever convinced that Podengos are related to the New Guinea Singing Dog.
