Allotments were introduced in Britain during WW11. The idea was to encourage people to grow food and keep hens on formerly common land in towns and cities. This it was hoped would reduce the deaths of sailors bringing food across the U-boat strewn Atlantic from Halifax. Many still exist and are still used to grow flowers and vegetables.

They also provide shelter for illegal immigrants and foxes. Some immigrants cut a hole in a wire fence, so that they could break into the sheds and sleep out of the rain. A fox also thought that this was a good idea. Maria, our Podengo Medio, followed a scent and disappeared into three acres of garden plots and sheds.

She found the fox but not the immigrants, as we heard vociferous barking in the distance. For over an hour, we heard hunting yelps but all we saw was a flash of yellow as she raced past. Fortunately foxes seem to prefer flight to fight, unless it is a vixen defending cubs. So she eventually returned uninjured..

Traditional english hunting of foxes by men and women in red jackets on horse-back with foxhounds has been banned - although it does seem to continue. So there are many more foxes than previously.

Maria also catches rabbits and chases grey squirrels until they run up a tree. I have not been able to find hare-coursing events in London, but greyhounds chase electronic hares around race tracks. Maria runs at about 25mph and can keep up with whippets.
