    Hello all,

Im hoping to learn more about the coat patterns seen in Podengos , how common certain colors are etc..
I have done as much research on my own as I can , but this is one area im very ignorant and definetly looking to learn more.

Im mostly interested in the occurence of white markings seen in the podengo medios.

I believe im a well researched potential owner and now that im certain the podengo is a breed for me , im interested in colors and how much option is there.

    Thanks,

If you are wondering if white collar or white feet are common pattern - while it occurs often it is not required. There is some interesting colors in some hunt packs and historically there was a quite famous all black hunt pack many years ago - some still remain.

In general all white is not allowed - otherwise the colors range from light fawn to a deeper red and most everything in between and must have white somewhere (don't want them to look like Pharohs or Cirneco) Since most breeders in Portugal breed for the hunt - the ability to hunt is far more important than color intensity or pattern.

There have not really been enough litters of the big sizes to determine if there is a percentage or if sire and dame look like this get will look like that - when it comes to color. The pequenos from breeders who are actually creating lines and document that information might be able to provide more specific information.

    Thanks for your reply!

I would be very interested in seeing the Black podengo pack!

I guess in a way your answer is about the best i'm likely going to get haha

In my potential dog , what I'm hoping to find is a dog that is both striking in color and conformation , I know in the grand scheme of things color is not importent , but the more striking the dog looks the more easily remembered it will be.
I have some big hopes for the potential podengo medio I would like to have and I guess only time will tell.

Please see the entry Podengo rescues from the Cape Verdes above for a photo of Jet a black Podengo, no doubt crossed as the original Podengos were in Portugal with a mix of other breeds. She has a beautiful soft black coat with a white waistcoat, socks and tail tip. Her brother and sister are both tan. All have the amazing speed and agility of Podengos. Jet can jump up onto a narrow window-sill five foot off the ground and balance on it. Jet is now on my Avatar although she is living happily in Nuremberg, Germany.
