The skinny male, mostly black and tan dog came up to Maria, our Podengo Medio in a park beside the Thames in London.  Maria gave her usual three barks, which is how she greets almost every dog that comes up to her uninvited.  Both dogs were on short leashes so they coiuld not get very close: and I was just waiting for Maria`s aggressive bark, which means GO AWAY!

But this time it was quite different.  Soon both dogs were lunging towards each other, straining on the leash. Released from the leash, they ran happily together.  Bodhi, a dog rescued from India, has had two back legs broken, so he cannot run very fast. But he can dodge and weave just like a podengo.

Maria clearly recognized him as a distant relative and really enjoyed playing with him. The owner was not sure what type of dog Bodhi is, but we found his type on the internet - an Indian Pariah.  Like the Podengo, this dog is descended from the pale-footed wolf. Apart from his color, he was very like Maria in gait, running style, agility and expressions.

A week ago, we met Ada  another Podengo Medio.  She was rescued from Transylvania, a mountainous region of Romania, bordering the Ukraine.  Definitely  Podengo, but how did they get to Romania?  As its name suggests, it was also a Roman province: indeed its langauge derives from Latin.  Maybe the Romans took Podengos there from there from their homeland in the Levant, for the same reason that they shipped them to Iberia. another Roman province - for their amazing hunting skills.
