At first we were convinced that the dog owned by a French couple was a Podengo Medio.  He was a little taller than Maria our Podengo Medio who comes from the Cape Verde islands. He was also bulkier with more muscular body.  But in all other respects he closely resembled a Podengo Medio.  He likes to lie in the sun to sun-bathe. In March this is directly overhead in the tropics.  He chose a tiled floor with a concrete wall behind, to maximise the heat effect.  This is just what Maria does when she returns to her birth-place.

We talked to the owner, a French lady. Her husband is an intinerant electrical engineer, fixing the badly under-invested electrical generating plant in the Cape verdes.  Previously they were in Congo, where they rescued their pet. Like most owners of rescued dogs, she just called him a street dog.  But to me he was very close to a podengo medio.  The Spanish and Portuguese galleons did sail down the African coast to Angola and around Good Hope into the Indian Ocean. The Cape Verde islands, were  reached by sailing down Africa to Cap Vert in Senegal and then turning starboard toward the setting sun.  Eventually they would sight Boa Vista  (Good View) and could use their charts again.

On reflection, since the couple lived in Kinshasa, he is more likely to be a Basenji, which travelled by river overland from their original home in the Middle East.

Our most enjoyable encounter,on a short visit, was with a beautiful Golden Retriever. She visited us daily for treats of British fillet steak and cheese (delicacies undreamed of by the dog) and for affection. Like so many local dogs she lives outside without normal human contact and carries untreated fleas.

Our worst; finding a strycchnine-poisoned four month old kitten writhing and shuddering in the road. When she tried to stand, she collapsed.
