Lassie was a rough collie. The breed emerged in Scotland, during the 19th century, as a farm dog and herder.  You must have seen how well collies jump both in films and in agility competitions.  The highly intelligent collie dominates this sport to such an extent that there are special ABC events.  That is an acronym for All But Collies.

The German Shepherd, bred in Germany, about a century later for a similar role, is now much used for military and police work, because of its athleticism. It has starred in many more film roles than the collie, often seen leaping over hedges and fences. As America`s most popular dog breed, its jumping ability is well-known.

Much less known is the ability of the Podengo - perhaps because it is a rare breed, although variants may be encountered all around the world in territories once visited by Portuguese and Spanish ships. Yet Maria, when chasing a squirrel has run flat out (25mph -40km/h) and then jumped 7 foot (2m) up a tree trunk as the squirrel fled.

Jet the part Podengo in the Avatar, once jumped 4 foot (1.2 m) onto a narrow window sill.  Bianca, a white part-Podengo, perhaps crossed with a Springer Spaniel could easily jump onto the dining table - although herself only the size of a small Medio.  She once jumped onto a park bench, leaping first onto the seat, then onto the back-rest and then back to the ground all in a single fluent rush.  She was able to catch birds in flight,  which rashly turned back and flew overhead, underestimating her ability to jump straight up from a standing start.

There is no real way to compare the jumping ability of dogs of different sizes.  But if you do acquire a new Podengo, of whatever, size, do not underestimate the height of the fence that you will need in your back-yard.
