Maria meets an Etna hound Empty Maria meets an Etna hound

Like its close relatives, the Pharaoh hound from Malta and the Ibiza hound from Ibiza, the Etna from Sicily is very like a Podengo. It has a short reddish or ginger coat and is a little smaller and daintier than the Medio. But it is also very fast and agile and s superb rabbit hunter. In Sicily they use ferrets with bells on the flush the rabbit out of the warren. The Etnas can hear the bells in the tunnels and are waiting for the kill at the right hole. This female was rescued from Singapore, where it had been abandoned. You never see a dog in the streets in Singapore so presumably strays are all locked up very quickly. Premier Lee would surely not like dogs running loose in his very tidy city state.

As both dogs are female, the encounter was not a great hit. But they did recognize the kinships. Dogs are so much better at this than humans.

The full name of the dog breed is Cireneco dell`Etna. This derives from the Roman name for Libya, just across the sea in North Africa. Many of the ancestors of the current inhabitants of Sicily crossed the sea from Africa : they still do in rubber dinghies. So perhaps they brought some Etnas with them.
