Re: Foxy the Squirrel Hunter
I actually got to observe this pair in action - (trio if you count the squirrel) the 2 pequenos lay as flat to the ground as they can. The squirrel comes down the tree and twitches his tail - like 'yoooo hoooo here I am". The dogs are very quite and still flat - this continues with the squirrel teasing them closer and closer and then they will burst out to try to catch it - If the squirrel misjudges his escape - I think Game Over.
But it is very funny to see.

Re: Foxy the Squirrel Hunter
BTW that picture was when she was still pregnant couldn't jump to high then. I'll get some picture of Attie climbing just about up the tree to get the squirrels.

Maria, our Podengo Medio from the Cape Verdes, first discovered squirrels when she squeezed through narrow railings from a dog exercise yard into a graveyard. There are no mammals larger than a lizard in the island where she was born. But she knew exactly what to do.
For more than three quarters of an hour we heard hunting yelps in the distance and occasionally saw a flash of yellow as she raced across our view. At one point she leaped from a flat-out run and reached a height of 7 foot on one of the trees. Actually, he snout reached this height, just beside a tree and just below a fleeing squirrel. Her body followed, stretched diagonally below her head.
She stalks squirrels moving very slowly and silently with her head and body lowered. She makes good use of cover, such as grave stones. Once she backed into a hedge to conceal herself, from a playful squirrel. She was infuriated when a non-hunting dog walked past her cache and gave her position away.
If the squirrel escapes her final dash, she will gnaw the bark of the tree in frustration, emitting loud yelps. We were only able to recover her from her wild hunting spree with the help of another dog owner and another dog. We told our other dog Brando that there was a squirrel up a certain tree. When he started to yelp, Maria dashed up and we were able to grab her collar. This episode lasted 45 minutes.
She discovered rabbits on rough ground near a beach in North Devon. She discovered blackberry brambles, at the same time. Rabbits now live above ground, to avoid myxamatosis, which is spread in burrows. They have a warren among the thick brambles, impenetrable to foxes. But not to Maria. After 45 minutes, she returned without a rabbit, looking very disconsolate, with her face cut to pieces.
I did not take a photo.

Maria has now taken to hunting foxes
The local council at Chiswick on the Thames in London, put up metal fences all around a playground area in a park during the corona virus lockdown in England. The fences were not anchored into the ground. So they were not fox-proof, and made an ideal haven for a vixen to bring up her cubs.
The fences were not dog-proof either: well certainly not podengo-proof. Maria sniffed around the gaps between the fence and the ground until she found the fox entrance and exit. Then she crawled in. It took us over half an hour to retrieve her, during which time, she had a fight with a fox. A young fox cub, probably born this year, came running out of a gap on the fence. Shortly afterwards, we found Maria with a cut on her snout, probably made by claws rather than teeth. I cannot say who was the victor.
