Our first encounter was with a long-haired Podengo Pequeno. We thought at the time that he was some sort of Terrier-cross. This is how most owners describe them in both England and the Cape Verdes - as nearly all are rescued.

Vlekkie belonged to the station manager at South African Airways, on Sal, a vital refuelling point of American and European routes during the apartheid era. During his owners` long absences at work or shopping in Johannesburg, he would roam around the complex, bringing joy to everyone he met. When we swam, he would run round and round the pool. He would visit us every day - not for food but out of simple affection.

Tragically he was poisoned with strychnine in the front yard of his home, whilst his owners were away, shopping. So was his friend Robbie, a blond short-haired Podengo Medio, who was also very friendly.

Our next encounter was with Maria, a short-haired Podengo Medio, who arrived outside our house on the day after Christmas (called Boxing Day in England as it was when the nobility gave boxes of left-overs to their servants). She attached herself to us and became the lover of Brando our Labradengo - who might be her brother.

Jet in the avatar is a black and white Podengo look-alike, who arrived to chew my hand, from behind as I sat at the bar. Boyar another Medio came to the bar and sat on the sofa next to me. He now races up to us whenever he sees us pursued by his owner who thinks he is coming to bite us.  Maria also runs flat out in a tight circle before abruptly stopping and jumping up on any new-found european woman. Once she found a dozen Lithuanian female tourists and insisted on jumping up every one - including one who tried to escape. My wife`s ancestors came by ship from the Baltic to Scotland more than two millennia ago, so possibly she recognized their smell.

This is what she does every time we return from a shopping trip - ours take hours not days. If we return from a short vacation, she will sprint back and forwards for five minutes, jumping up each of us in turn. Brando, true to his Labrador genes, intersperses this with shaking his bed or his soft toy in his mouth.

I do not know how many other breeds behave like this?
