Hi, I am Wendy from Massachusetts. i have just agreed to take a medio podengo from someone. The people who have her are hunters and the female podengo is not very interested in hunting! She would rather play! She is only 7 months old and has pretty much lived in a dog kennel. I have read they are smart dogs so I hope she house trains quickly! Any advice would be appreciated. I have had dogs all my life, but never a breed that has such specific behaviors. I am picking up the dog later this week; the owner suggests crating her. I have never crated a dog so am a bit wary about that. Any comments/advice?

No need to put the dog in a crate unless you are flying. Podengo Medios are not more difficult than other dogs, they are just wilful amd will do what you ask if and when they choose. If she is not interested in hunting, that would be remarkable, but an advantage. Maria , our podengo medio will disappear for up to an hour and a half chasing any small mammal from squirrels to rabbits, urban foxes  and even seagulls.  Maria was already house-trained at six months when she rushed up to us outside our house in the Cape Verde islands. She is immensely affectionate and loyal and an excellent guardian.

The main problem encountered by most Podengo owners is to retrieve an errant dog that has run off after prey. It sounds as though you are lucky and do not have this issue. If it does develop the best answer seems to be repeated training with a whistle followed by hand feeding when the dog returns. With maria despite many weeks of such training, it is still only partially effective.
