Flower puppy groupies Empty Podengo Pequeno breeder in England

Post  james ensor Fri Feb 22, 2019 4:49 am

Right next to the video on the Flower Puppy boxers is a video on Pequenos being bred in England.  One is being exported to  America.

Betty Judge imported over 40 Pequenos from Portugal to form a gene pool.  Until 2002 she bred terriers but found Podengos to be less of a handful. She believes that there are 600 in Britain, although I suspect that there are many more that have come in as rescue dogs. Here is a link to her video of Pequeno puppies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Quhcn245VAU

She has a very good general knowledge of the breed.  But my own experience differs from hers in some respects.  Medios are definitely scent-hounds that run off and will not come back, when there is prey about.  It is hard to accept that they are not greedy. Nor could I call Maria suspicious of strangers or very obedient. And wire-coat Pequenos  were certainly not bred from a mix of dogs in England as someone in the Kennel Club apparently claimed.

But it is well worth watching to see the puppies.

I did what you said and found the video. I have rarely seen a Podengo puppy as the ones that we have encountered have all been older and I do not know that anyone is breeding them, deliberately, even in Portugal. They certainly look very appealing with the flowers.

But one of the comments alongside the video, from an American lady is probably most apt.

"I was given a Podengo as a gift, I was living in Portugal for two years, working at communities/living on farms. A lovely lady had a bunch of puppies and one was essentially "forced" on to me against my will. They are MENTAL. Huge warning to anyone considering getting one, they are absolutely bat shit crazy. If you want a dog bred for hunting and adept at killing rabbits. This is the dog for you."

I was at a dog show yesterday and today doing some meet the breed and judges hands on activities. It was also a good time to look over rally and agility and let them see the big Podengo. Today I went and my daughter and her puppy as well as another puppy (I do have a few LOL) went too - we were around the vendors when this lady shreeked. "Oh my God its the Flower Puppies!" She turned to the ladies around her - to the vendors near by and announced - "you have to see this youtube video - just type in puppies and flowers and you will get it - it is so funny you'll just die." (I think it's cute but not quite to that extreme)
For the next hour as we were trying to get 2 puppies walking in the same direction - while being stopped by other dogs, kids and adults we would from time to time be treated by her yelling out again - "see they are still here" to another bunch of folks that she would bring over to meet the 'flower puppies'. It was too funny - she was not a dog show person but obviously likes dogs and for her to recognize them was too funny. I thought she would ask for an autograph!
