May I introduce myself? I am Portuguese and I live in the centre of Portugal, near Tomar. I have recently started working with a shelter at Golega (the "horse capital" of Portugal) and in my last visit a little podengo touched my heart: he so much wanted to come close to the people visiting his box, but he didn't dare to... The most he could do was to sniff the tip of my fingers briefly, not close enough for giving him a scratch behind his ears.

That made me think of this forum, that I had visited in the past: is there any chance to try and get these little dogs adopted through here? There are quite a few at the shelter, as they are very common and often discarded by hunters (or getting lost themselves). Of course, none of them have any papers certifying the pureness of their blood, but I could easily take pictures or videos, if the site allows for it. Maybe we could find good homes for them this way?

As you know the reason for stray Podengos in rural Portugal is because many rural people and farmers keep their Podengos outside and the females breed with whatever dog happens to come along. Then they do not want the puppies.

It is simple to send a dog to another European country by obtaining an European passport. Many rescued Podencos from Andalucia already travel to the UK. There is even a special dog bus which collects a dog from its rescue centre or holiday home in Andalucia and will deliver it to a new home in the UK. It does not visit Portugal because of the tolls on the autovias. But we have used it to transport dogs by driving dogs from Lisbon across the Spanish frontier for a rendez-vous. Sending a dog to the United States or Canada is more complicated because of import conditions and the need to fly in a crate in the hold. But TAP can supply these. I suggest that you try to load some photos of some of the Podengos and give a little history.
