Podengo in RI Empty Podengo in RI

I adopted this one as a 'terrier mix' from a shelter. I took her to a trainer who said 'that's a Podengo.' Dealing with behavior problems from an untrained past is one thing. Genetics is completely something else. Everything I read states that this type of dog can never run loose despite training. That appears to be true, is it? If so, is there anyone out there who would like to take on a (+/-) two year old spayed podengo medio wirehair female?

And oh yeah, most likely with luxating patellas.

Yeah right. She can be so sweet, and yet so completely wild. I'm way over my head with this one.

If you have any pictures that would be helpful. In that area it is indeed possible Podengo or more likely podengo mix. Only a handful of the hunters have packs that are pure podengo and none of them is missing a girl that I can find. Sometimes if a dog doesn't hunt - they do bring it to the shelter now which is a lot better than just dumping on the side of the road.

What are the issues you are having with training. If it is a Podengo (or a terrier for that matter) nope not off leash ever. If they are hunting in the pack fixed on prey they will stick around their packmates but one human doesn't make a pack. They respond to treat motivated training and inspite of their toughness - are actually quite soft and harsh corrections don't work very well.

I tried to upload a photo, but couldn't do it. Here is a link that I loaded onto Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/canvasflyer/6022314553/

No, this dog won't suit my lifestyle. I hiked a lot with my wire fox terrier, but not so much recently, because I'm always attached to this new dog by a string. Takes away freedom of motion for both of us.

I want to do right by her, and after she got out today, can see that she needs a different situation-somewhere that she can happily hunt all day, not be stuck in a sterile yard.

We don't have any formal rescue however I did post on another list and could post on the club website - people look quite often to find what they are looking for. Neither of these processes would be very fast but I'm sure that a good home would show up eventually.

I would appreciate any avenues available to rehoming Ampy, and I'm not in a haste to kick her out of my life. But she does need to go liveelsewhere. In the meantime, I'll continue to work with the trainer and with Ampy. She's so smart and funny, and so in tune with my emotions, more so than my wire fox terrier that I've had since puppyhood. It's a shame I can't do right by her, but I can't.

If anyone wants further contact info from me, let me know. I'll upload more photos on Flickr.
    Thanks,
    Christine

    Welcome to the forum!

    Have you considered an E-collar?

I know with mine his drive was so high that its an option I went to and I'm not sorry I did. I rarely have to use the shock feature , I really only use the vibrate option and thats when he is off leash.

If I hadnt just lost my job , I would be seriously considering offering a home to your dog. Best of luck! They arent a breed for everyone thats for sure.

I have an e collar, (well ok my friend has had it so long I may not see it again!), but it won't make the situation right for Ampy or for me. At this point, my feeling is that I did right by this dog by taking her out of an inner city shelter, showing her that life is not full of violence towards her, and now, trying to find someone who knows, understands, and wants the breed.

    Sorry about your job loss.

Thats understandable , we have rehomed animals before because they just werent a good fit in our home.

Right now my mother has a dog shes been trying to rehome. She got a pitt/akita mix and hes just to much dog for her , hell he weighs over half of what she does!

The job loss is no big , just opens another door! =)
