I am totally a newby, so I will defer to those who know more. When one finds a breed of dog in a shelter, though, it is not necessarily a purbred.I see podengoishness esp brought out by the ears, but the coat is kinda heeler too. The body seems a blend.

Where what the first photo taken? Its really beautiful!

I am new to this discussion and have noticed that people are slow to respond, but James likely will - given a month or so. Tell me about Shaman's personality....

    Dobry Den

I would say that Shaman is a Podengo, He has many of the markings. The sharp, upright ears, the white tip to the tail, white strip on the forehead, white socks and the white waistcoat are all classic Podengo marks. His powerful rear legs ressemble those of Marduk. Perhaps the real test is does he have the speed and agility of a Podengo? The way that they can leap sideways, spin in the air, jump upward 1.5 metres and jump downwards up to 3 metres onto soft surfaces are giveaway traits of these dogs.

The point is that the Podengo breed is 2,000 years old and they have developed naturally in many sizes, shapes and forms in several different countries from Malta to Portugal. You cannot compare this to the German Shepherd or Boxer bred in Germany in the nineteenth century from a single pair and then interbred amongst their close relatives, ever since.

Some people thuink that the Dingo developed from Podengos taken to Australia by Portuguese sailors. But the breed is I believe generally more aggressive and hard to domesticate.

    The Tatras look beautiful.

Hi James - I knew you'd come through!

A defining quality is speed and agility? Does the podengo have a double-suspension running gait like greyhounds?

I am not familiar with greyhounds. But you can see in the photos from the Tatras, that both dogs, have powerful back legs and light bodies. Whilst clearly not as fast as a greyhound on a race track, they have great speed over broken ground, rocks, low vegetation, streams etc which they bound across with confidence.

They appear to have - at least those Medios that I have seen - a different joint structure to many other dogs. Front legs can splay wide and rear legs can be folded right out beside them when they lie down. This I believe must increase agility because they can push legs out to the side and swivel more abruptly than any dog that I have seen. I would compare them to polo ponies rather than race horses. Some are even able to climb low branches of trees.

The running gait when flat out appears to be a gallop, with forelegs and rear legs working synchronously and the run can be interspersed with great bounds across broken ground. To me this skill, obviously essential in hunting in rough ground is perhaps what most distinguishes the larger Podengos from some other dogs.

So far as i know a greyhound is a sight hound and an out and out sprinter, which tires relatively quickly. This is ideally suited to their original prey, the hare. On the track they follow the hare by sight.

Podengos do not seem to have particularly strong sight. They are known as smell hounds and they have a sense of smell, which ewven for a dog seems to be outstanding. They also have acute hearing.

Another difference to the greyhound is that they are referred to as endurance trotters. That is to say that they have the ability to trot for long periods and still show a burst of speed, when needed. I have seen them running after seagulls on a beach for over an hour without apparent fatigue. This would involve bursts of considerable speed over perhaps a quarter of a mile, interspersed with very short rest, until the next flock is sighted.

I do not know whether greyhounds do this.

The relatively rare Podengo Grande, with much longer legs (I believe that is one in the Tatra photo) can possibly hunch their backs and gallop with a huge stride, their powerful rear legs landing forward of their forelegs. But I have never seen one of these boar hunters.

Interestingly enough the Australian cattle dog was bred by Thomas Hall a New South Wales cattle rancher in the Nineteeth century. He crossed a wild Australian Dingo with a sheepdog from his original homeland Northumberland in England. This produced an outstanding cowdog, which herded cattle by nipping their heels. It is still known as either a Blue Heeler or a Red Heeler, because of this working habit.

If Podengos did influence Dingos maybe some of the same characteristics fed through to the Australian dog. Purely from photos Shaman seems to have more Podengo than Australian cattle dog to him.

I would expect the catle dog to be more of a herder or sheepdog type. Perhaps it was bred from the British Border Collie, a very trainable and intelligent dog, which can perform the most remarkable human-dog interactions in sheepdog trials. Professor Stanley Coren a psychologist at the University of British Columbia analysed training and obedience records for some 150 dogs. The Border Collie came out top dog for its ability to learn commands with very little practice. The Australian cattle dog came tenth.

Unfortunately there was not enough information available on the Podengo for any of the types to be rated by the Professor. But if Shaman is a Podengo, he will be much more interested in chasing stray smells than in nipping cattle.
